Amsterdam, Arts en Culture.

The art of Amsterdam starts with the fact that the city originally was an excellent trading post and created a large crowd of rich people. The wealthy merchants had enough money for wall coverings and attracted numerous artists to town. This, combined with the Protestant faith and hospitable manors, brought Amsterdam a reputation of being 'tolerant' and 'artistic'. A few centuries later the city appealed to the hippies of the 1960s as a mecca of youth culture, sexual freedom and legal narcotics, a reputation that Amsterdam still has not lost. Today the city is trying to blur its liberal reputation, and lies it’s focuses on expensive art and culture of higher prestige.Today there are more museums per capita than any other city in the world, an abundance of interesting and well-filled galleries and a thriving experimental, innovative, underground culture. The new Theatre, the renovated Stedelijk Museum, the Music Building on the IJ, Amsterdam's new Public Library, the Hermitage and the Volkskrant building all contribute to innovation and accessibility of theater, dance, music, festivals and all other forms of cultural entertainment in the capital of the Netherlands.
