Time to go out for a drink in Amsterdam. The drinking culture in Amsterdam is mainly found outside the home. This is primarily due to the extremely high number of nice terraces. Once the sunshine breaks through, terraces instantly fill up with locals and inspired visitors alike, and all of a sudden it seems that no-one needs to be at the office.
Amsterdam offers ample choice for a good drink: from the renowned, informal and friendly pubs to high-class venues serving cocktail and maintaining dress code. Drink prices vary extensively: the more central and deeper into the haughty expensive Old South, the more you pay for a typical "Amsterdam vase" of crystal clear Heineken. The choice of wine bars in Amsterdam has been substantially extended, reducing the risk of receiving a glass of sour tasting and headache inducing Chateau Migraine significantly. Although “jenever”, the local Dutch gin distillate, seems to be extremely popular with tourists, vodka's popularity is clearly on the rise amongst locals.
In addition to alcoholic beverages, Amsterdam is a good place for coffee aficionados. Almost all cafes serve a decent espresso, and so do the take out outlets of the Coffee Company - these better not to be confused with coffee shops clearly selling other goodies....
