Boekenmarkt Oudemanhuispoort

The Oudemanhuispoort is a building complex in Amsterdam located between the Spui and the Waterlooplein. It is one of the main locations of the University of Amsterdam. Originally it was used as a retirement home for men.

In the public section of the Oudemanhuispoort is a daily book market. This market started in 1879 when at the time the book market at the Botermarkt (now Rembrandtplein) was shut down, and the concerned book dealers were able to get a space in the Oudemanhuispoort. They took over the fifteen so called store cabinets.

The university and the book stands are inseparably linked with each other, thousands of students and employees have memories on browsing through these books. When the store cabinets are unattended in the evening, nights and weekends, they make a surreal impression with the enormous closed shutters that are opened up during the day. The so cozy Poort gets an almost Kafkaesque eerie atmosphere during the week.
